OH DEER!

Image
Living in the Foothills, I have learned one thing is always for certain. It's not IF the deer will eat it but WHEN! Last year we still weren't able to get the garden in so I set-up a little bucket garden out in what is now the backyard (DH finished the backyard fences at the end of last summer).  My little garden thrived and amazingly enough the deer left my tomatoes, peppers and artichokes completely alone. Bucket Garden The backyard without the fence    The plants thrived all summer long...until the backyard fence went up.  We had just finished all of the fencing with the exception of the gates and that night the deer decided there must be something good behind those walls. Finished backyard fence     Needless to say - the deer ate the plants - well not completely true, they ate all the leaves.  Unfortunately, I don't have a picture but just image white bucket with empty twigs coming out of them :(.  Any hoo  - so this year we are prepared.

Raised Bed Garden In the Sierra Foothills

Image
Four years ago, we moved out of Sacraments (smack dab in the middle of the city) to a rural 5 acres in the middle of the Sierra Nevada Foothills.  We have spent the last 4 years clearing brush, fighting the bark beetle and building fire breaks.  We can now finally breathe again and begin really work on developing the property.  Building the garden and chicken coop are on this year's list as well as finally begin updating our 1945 cabin. Preparing the Raised Garden Step 1 of putting in the garden required adding soil to the 29' x 29' area to level it out. Greenhouse Pad   Soil from the Greenhouse to be area filled the Raised Garden Area. Garden Base Finished   The garden base complete and leveled.  Boy that was a lot of dirt.  Next steps will be to build the garden frame and fence and fill with garden soil.
